Concrete Penetrating Sealer Coat.

When selecting a concrete sealer for stamped concrete, it’s important to choose one that provides adequate protection while enhancing the appearance of the stamped pattern and color. There are two primary types of sealers for stamped concrete: film-forming sealers and penetrating sealers.
1. Film-forming Sealers:
These sealers create a protective layer on the surface of the concrete. They provide a glossy finish and are ideal for enhancing the colors and patterns of stamped concrete. There are two main types:
- Acrylic Sealers: These are the most common choice for stamped concrete. Acrylic sealers are available in both water-based and solvent-based formulas. Water-based acrylics are easier to apply, have lower odor, and dry faster, while solvent-based acrylics tend to provide a stronger, more durable finish with a deeper gloss. Both types help preserve the color of the concrete and protect it from moisture, dirt, and stains.
- Polyurethane Sealers: These sealers provide a more durable, long-lasting finish than acrylics. They are more resistant to abrasions and chemicals but tend to give a less glossy finish compared to acrylic sealers.
Advantages of Film-forming Sealers:
- Provide a glossy finish that enhances the color and design of stamped concrete.
- Help protect against staining, UV damage, and water penetration.
- Easy to apply and maintain.
Disadvantages:
- May require reapplication over time due to wear and weather exposure.
- Can be slippery when wet if not applied properly.
Penetrating Sealers:
Penetrating sealers soak into the surface of the concrete and provide protection without leaving a visible film. They don’t alter the appearance of the stamped pattern as much as film-forming sealers, but they are excellent for protecting against moisture, salts, and freeze-thaw damage.
- Silicone-based Sealers: These provide moderate protection against water penetration and help reduce staining without affecting the color too much.
- Silane or Siloxane Sealers: These are more advanced penetrating sealers, offering superior protection against water and moisture. They tend to leave no visible finish, preserving the natural look of the stamped concrete.
Advantages of Penetrating Sealers:
- Great for outdoor stamped concrete in climates that experience freeze-thaw cycles.
- Less maintenance required compared to film-forming sealers.
- Won’t alter the natural look of the concrete.
Disadvantages:
- Less effective at enhancing the appearance or providing a glossy finish.
- Generally, less durable for high-traffic areas than film-forming sealers.
Recommendations:
- For a glossy finish that enhances colors and gives a wet look, choose solvent-based acrylic or urethane sealers.
- For natural-looking protection that doesn’t alter the appearance much, go with penetrating sealers like silane or siloxane.
- Reapply regularly based on the sealer’s type and environmental conditions.
Before applying any sealer, ensure the surface is clean and dry, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.
